Sox take first game of the Mayor’s Cup beating Twins 8-3

Josh Beckett started and pitched two scoreless innings and Lars Anderson hit a grand slam, leading the Sox to an 8-3 victory over the Twins in the first real spring training game at Jet Blue Park. Mike Aviles got the Sox on the board with a 2 run single in the fourth. The game remained close until the bottom of the 7th when Lars Anderson blasted grand slam deep into the right field stands. Anderson hit a hanging breaking ball for the homer which Valentine said, “broke something when it landed in the parking lot.”  Tony Pena Jr. ended up getting the win for the Sox who now take a 1-0 lead in the coveted Mayor’s Cup.

Other Notes

  • Andrew Miller, who is battling for a rotation spot was impressive, striking out three over two innings. He was topped off at 97, and consistently sat at 93 mph.
  • Mark Melancon did not look crisp in his first outing of the spring. The former Astro gave up 2 hits and a run in his lone inning of work.
  • Lefty, Justin Thompson, continues to impress this spring, striking out 2 in his perfect inning of work.
