For the 7th time in 9 starts in 2012 Clay Buchholz surrendered 5 or more earned runs. Buchholz has been an unmitigated disaster this season posting the highest ERA (7.84) and WHIP (1.91) for a qualified starting pitcher in Major League Baseball.
For comparison, during John Lackey’s 2011 season, a season many consider to be the worst in Red Sox history, he gave up 5 or more earned runs 10 times in 28 starts (he also did in 10 times in 33 starts in 2010). If Buchholz continues to have 5+ ER games at the same pace he is looking at doing it 23 times (in 30 starts). Extrapolating numbers out like that is silly, nobody should expect him to be that bad, but if he does not improve quickly he could easily lose his spot in the starting rotation.
